Survey Governance

The University Survey Advisory Team (U-SAT) was recharged in 2015 under the executive sponsorship of Karen Hanson, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and Bob McMaster, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education. The committee, who was initially formed in 2009 as the Office of Planning Analysis Survey Advisory Team (O-SAT), worked to identify issues regarding survey and sampling activities at the University of Minnesota. The work completed by current and former committee members improved survey-related efficiency and access, increased survey participation and facilitated a self-service survey model with the purchase of Qualtrics and Campus Labs. The Office of Planning and Analysis Survey Advisory Team (O-SAT) was formed in 2009 to assess the current survey environment at the University and identify solutions for existing challenges. Issues like survey fatigue and low response rates were negatively affecting data, while a rise in third-party survey tools created inefficiencies and legal risks for the University. Comprised of representatives from the Office of Measurement Services, the Office for Institutional Research, and the Office of Planning and Analysis, O-SAT aims to create a collaborative environment that allows the University to be more intentional with its resources devoted to survey activity.

Student survey fatigue, however, remains as a particular concern across the University. U-SAT will work to further address survey-related issues, including protecting students from repeated survey requests while respecting the need to conduct research within the student population.

Comprised of representatives from the Office of Measurement Services, the Office for Institutional Research, the Office of Undergraduate Education, and the College of Liberal Arts, U-SAT aims to create a collaborative environment that allows the University to be more intentional with its resources devoted to survey activity.
